St. Andrew-Windfields is one of the largest communities on the southeast side of North York, Toronto. It is an affluent neighborhood with a family median income 46% higher than Toronto Average.

Community Overview

The boundary of the St. Andrew-Windfields community runs from Yonge Street on the west to York Mills Road in the south, East Don River on the east, and highway 401 on the south. Although several main streets, including Yonge Street, Bayview Avenue, Leslie Street, and highway 401, run through or bordering the community, most residential areas are quiet and peaceful, attracting many wealthy families to settle here.

1. Housing:

Single detached houses occupy about 85% of residential real estate land in this part of north York. The original housing stocks consisted of bungalows, split-level, and 2-story homes sitting on an average 60 feet front and mostly built between the 1960s and early 1970s. Many dated houses were torn down and redeveloped into multi-million dollar modern homes. There are also a few semi-detached homes, mid-rise condo buildings and townhouses, and high-rise rental apartments on major streets along Yonge Street, Bayview Avenue, Leslie Street, Highway 401, and York Mills Road. East of Leslie Street is concentrated on commercial and light industrial real estate. About 33% of the residents are tenants throughout the community.

2. Demographic:

Half of the population in the St. Andrew-Windfields community is a visible minority. About 45% of the residents are of European Origin, and 31% are of East and Southeast Asia origin. Chinese, British Isles origins, English, Canadian, Iranian and Polish are top ethnic origins. The top birthplaces of all immigrants are China, Iran, Hong Kong, South Korea, and other places in Asia. Also, a significantly higher proportion of the residents have a bachelor's degree and above.

3. Transportation:

Most residents use cars as their primary mode of transportation. The community borders highway 401. Car commuters can quickly get on the route and conveniently travel in all directions. Around 27% of residents travel by public transit. York Mills subway station and Oriole Go Train station are within the community's boundary. Numerous buses run through the community and have bus stops along York Mills Road, Yonge Street, Bayview Avenue, and Leslie Street.

4. Recreation:

Several small parks are spread throughout the community, including Tournament Park, St. Andrew Park, Owen Park, Dunlace Park, Mossgrove Park, and Kirkwood Park. Connecting Duncan Mill Road and Sheppard Avenue, Betty Sutherland Trail is a 3.5 km woody and tranquil trail along the east Don River. West to Betty Sutherland Park, Graydon Hall Manor is a famous destination for weddings and entertainment occasions.

5. Shopping:

St. Andrew-Windfields is mainly a residential community where shoppers can find small shopping plazas along Yonge Street, Bayview Avenue, and Leslie Street. Anchored by Longo's Supermarket, Shoppers Drug Mart, and LCBO, York Mills Garden Plaza is located at York Mills Road and Leslie Street and occupies 89K square feet of retail space. York Mills Shopping Center, located at York Mills Road and Bayview Avenue, is an outdoor shopping center anchored by a Metro supermarket.

6. Schools:

Three elementary schools serve the students from JK to grade 5, Owen Public School covers the west of Bayview Street, and Dunlace Public School and Harrison Public School share the area between Bayview Avenue and Leslie Street. Grade 6 to grade 8 students west of Bayview Street will attend St. Andrews Middle School, and east will attend Windfields Middle School. Founded in 1957, York Mills Collegiate Institute is the only secondary school for the community. The excellent school ranks around 50 over 739 high schools in Ontario. York Mills Collegiate Institute also delivers a French Immersion program to students. Located at the west of Leslie Street, Bayview Glenn independent school is a private school founded in 1962, admitting students from Grade 2 to Grade 12.
